China Establishes Recall Systems For Food, Toys

CBS News Interactive: A Timeline Of Toys

BEIJING (CBS) ― Recall systems for unsafe food products and toys went into effect Friday in China as part of a bid to improve product safety, state media said.

Xinhua News Agency said the recall systems - set up by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine - follow an earlier recall system set up for defective cars in 2005.

The food and toy recall systems were announced earlier in the year but no dates or details had been given.

China has been struggling to improve the image of its products. Toys are the latest in a lengthening list of Chinese exports, including pet food and animal feed, that have been found to contain high levels of chemicals and toxins, triggering worldwide concerns and numerous recalls of goods ranging from toothpaste to pet food ingredients.
