Tropical Storm Watches Issued Ahead Of Ida

MIAMI (CBS) ― Tropical Storm Ida has gained strength in the last 3 hours with maximum winds now up to 60 miles per hour. The storm reemerged into the Gulf of Mexico late last night and has begun a north-northwestward track towards the Yucatan Peninsula and the U.S. Gulf Coast. The storm regained tropical storm status overnight and has prompted hurricane watches and tropical storm warnings for parts of the Yucatan Peninsula, Grand Cayman Island and parts of Cuba.

Mexico issued a Hurricane Watch for the Yucatan Peninsula from Tulam to Cabo Catoche, reports CBS station WFOR-TV. The Mexican government also issued a tropical storm warning for the Yucatan Peninsula from Punta Allen northward so San Felipe.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for Grand Cayman Island and Cuba has also issued a tropical storm warning for the province of Pinar Del Rio.

As of 10:00 A.M., the center of Tropical Storm Ida was located near latitude 17.9 North and longitude 84.1 West, or roughly 255 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico. Ida is currently moving to the north at 8 miles per hour, but is expected to turn towards the northwest over the next 48 hours and pick up speed.

Maximum sustained winds for Ida are near 60 miles per hour with some higher gusts. Ida may strengthen further over the next day or two. Tropical Storm winds extend outward from the center of the storm up to 105 miles.

The storm is going to run into strong wind shear over the next few days as it makes its way into the Gulf of Mexico. Despite the warm Gulf waters, the storm is expected to weaken by Tuesday-Wednesday of next week according to the National Hurricane Center.
