N.H. Grandmother Sacrifices Life To Save Baby

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The father of the baby rescued from the rubble of last week's tornado in New Hampshire will never forget his stepmother who gave her life to protect someone else.

Jeremy Stevens says he's grateful for his stepmother who died trying to save his son. Baby John suffered some nicks and scrapes on his head and knuckles, but otherwise he's fine.

The tornado ripped through Deerfield and 10 other New Hampshire communities on Thursday. Brenda Stevens was the only person killed. She was trying to protect her grandson as the house came down around her. "Brenda was holding on to him and when the tornado came through my father ran down to get to the both of them… (Brenda) held on to (John) long enough so that he didn't get tossed around… Because of her, he's still here. I love her more than anything else in the world."

Jeremy says that when the storm hit, all the roads to his neighborhood were blocked by debris. He ran five miles up a road and swam across a lake to get to his son.

More than 200 homes were damaged by the tornado, and according to FEMA, at least 19 were destroyed.
