Gov. Deval Patrick renewed his threat to veto the sales tax if he doesn't get an ethics reform with a gift ban for elected officials, and he says even with a veto proof majority in the House and Senate, it's not a done deal.
Saturday at an event in Boston, Patrick said, "I've been clear about what I want to see, and I wouldn't presume that a veto won't be sustained."
Patrick explained, "Unless that budget comes to me and is right, then I'll have to veto the sales tax. Asking people to continue to do the same old, same old is something I won't do and can't do."
The Governor has said he wants transportation, pension, and ethics reform before he will sign into law a sales tax hike. So far, the legislature has approved transportation and pension reform, but ethics reform has been held up in the conference committee.
The Governor says, "It's got to approve a gift ban. It's got to empower the enforcing agencies, and if it does and I get it in time I will support the budget."
The House version of the bill had been in similar to the Governor's gift ban, but the Senate version was not as strict.
