The FBI is conducting an internal investigation into whether one of its agents helped his brother in his bid to unseat Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.
The Springfield Republican newspaper reports agent Michael O'Reilly, whose brother Edward O'Reilly is Kerry's first Democratic primary challenger, has joined his brother at fundraisers, was a delegate to the state party convention and served on the Democratic town committee in Longmeadow, where he lives.
A spokesman for the FBI's New Haven, Conn., office said O'Reilly told supervisors he wasn't aware his activities may have violated a law limiting political activity by federal employees. He also said he had resigned from the Longmeadow committee. The matter has been referred FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility.
Michael O'Reilly's home telephone is unlisted. His brother's campaign did not immediately comment. A Kerry spokeswoman declined comment.
