27-Vote Margin Gives Lynn 1st Female Mayor

LYNN (WBZ) ― A 47-year-old mother from Lynn, who got into the race at the last minute, has been elected that city's first female mayor.

Republican Judith Flanagan Kennedy won by the narrowest of margins, defeating two-term incumbent Chip Clancy by just 27 votes.

"Twenty-seven votes. Never in my wildest imagination would I have thought it would be such a narrow victory or narrow defeat," Kennedy told WBZ Radio's Carl Stevens.

Her campaign was anything but traditional. She entered the race late, after the death of candidate Pat McManus in January. Kennedy ran a sticker campaign to get onto the ballot.

"His staff was in place, my sticker expertise was in place and it was just a matter of combining those and getting onto the final ballot." From there, Kennedy said, it was a pretty traditional campaign. She credited her army of dedicated volunteers for catapulting her to victory over Clancy.

More than 16,000 votes were cast in Lynn. The final tally was 8,043-8,016.

"That's an incredibly narrow margin of victory and I fully expect that's in recount territory," Kennedy said. "But for now those are the official results and we're 27 votes to the positive and we'll take that and be thrilled with it."

Kennedy said Mayor Clancy did call to congratulate her Tuesday night, though she anticipates the final chapter has not yet been written.
