Already Boston's longest-serving mayor, Thomas Menino is facing perhaps his strongest challenge yet as he seeks an unprecedented fifth consecutive four-year term.
Menino is opposed in Tuesday's election by City Council President Michael Flaherty, who says the current administration has grown complacent and arrogant after more than 16 years in office.
The mayor says he still has plenty of energy and hasn't ruled out running for additional terms in the future.
Menino received about 50 percent of the vote in the September preliminary election. Flaherty, who had 24 percent of the vote, partnered with third-place finisher Sam Yoon after the preliminary and has promised to make Yoon his deputy mayor.
The last incumbent mayor to lose an election in Boston was James Michael Curley in 1949.
