Odds Of Casinos In Mass. Getting Better
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
The odds of Massachusetts rolling the dice on expanded gambling are getting rosier by the day.
The election of Robert DeLeo as House Speaker is breathing new life into a debate that seemed all but dead until former Speaker Salvatore DiMasi suddenly resigned.
While DeLeo voted with DiMasi to kill Gov. Deval Patrick's proposal to license three resort-style casinos, he's never voiced the same level of opposition as DiMasi.
On Sunday's "Keller @ Large" WBZ's Jon Keller asked DeLeo point-blank - "Casinos in our future, yes or no?"
"I'd say under my speakership, they're in play. Let's put it that way," DeLeo said.
"I've always been a proponent relative to maybe slots at racetracks. Having said that I'm very open to a discussion relative to casinos. Whether I embrace it or not, we'll see. I'm open to any discussion relative to expanded gambling to bring in additional revenue."

In 2006, DeLeo broke with DiMasi and voted for a plan to allow up to 2,000 slot machines at each of the state's four racetracks.
Already a half-dozen gambling-related bills have been filed in the House, including the slot machine proposal and another seeking to revive Patrick's casino plan.
