New Transport Super Agency Takes Over In Mass.

BOSTON (AP) ― A new state super agency that oversees most of Massachusetts' transportation needs has officially taken over.

Monday is the first full work day the Massachusetts Department of Transportation that will oversee almost all major roads and bridges, as well as municipal airports.

The agency was created to save money and streamline resources. Officials say it could save the state $6 billion over 20 years.

The department combines the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and the state Highway Department, and will take over roads and bridges previously overseen by the Massachusetts Port Authority and the state parks department.

The MBTA will report to the same board.

Some problems integrating multiple agencies are expected, and critics say savings won't be as high as touted.
