Attorney General Martha Coakley has given the go-ahead to a group that wants to overturn the Legislature's
repeal of a law barring marriages in Massachusetts by out-of-state same-sex couples.
Coakley said Monday the group's proposed ballot question meets the necessary technical requirements, but added she does not necessarily support the measure.
Supporters led by the group
MassResistance now must gather 33,000 signatures by the end of October to appear on the November 2010 ballot.
They are seeking to reinstate a 1913 law making it illegal for couples to get married in Massachusetts if their unions would be illegal in their home states.
The House and Senate
voted this summer to repeal the law. Gov. Deval Patrick signed the repeal.
