Patrick Signs Book Deal For $1.3 Million
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Gov. Deval Patrick has signed a deal with a New York City company to publish his autobiography.
Broadway Books announced the deal Friday. Terms were not disclosed, but it's believed to be worth $1.3 million, according to WBZ's Jon Keller.
Keller discovered Thursday that Patrick was making the rounds of New York publishing houses peddling his book last Thursday, while his casino bill was being defeated on Beacon Hill.
According to a publishing executive who saw the proposal, it promises a highly personal account "like Barack Obama's first book" - of Patrick's childhood growing up poor on Chicago's South Side, his journey to Milton Academy courtesy of a scholarship program that helps underprivileged kids obtain top-shelf secondary educations, and his matriculation at Harvard University.
A spokesperson for the publisher said Patrick will write the book himself. Stacy Creamer, Deputy Editorial Director for Broadway Books, will edit the book, which does not have a title at this point. It's due to be published in 2010.
Patrick will donate part of his royalties and speaking fees to A Better Chance, the organization that helped send him to Milton Academy as a teenager.
As for the timing of the trip to New York last week, Joe Landolfi, the governor's communications director, said Patrick's absence did not affect the outcome of the vote.
"To suggest that the governor's absence from the State House in any way impacted the House vote on his casino legislation is baseless," Landolfi said in a statement.
"The Governor worked tirelessly up to the day of the vote to persuade House members of the merits of the economic development potential of his casino initiative and to further encourage members to debate the legislation in full on the House floor."
