Free Advice Handed To New Dad Tom Brady

by Jon Keller
BOSTON (WBZ) ― When a couple's first baby comes along they can count on receiving lots of stuffed animals, hugs and free advice.

The more complicated the parents' relationship, the more advice they're likely to get.

That goes for Tom Brady and Bridget Moynahan, too.

But while many parents these days lack a marriage license or a common address, not all of them handle the situation well.

One of the region's leading family mediators spells out how those parents can keep an eye on the ball.

Teamwork may be second nature to Brady on the football field, but veteran family mediator Janet Miller Wiseman cautions that parents who don't live together must confront some very tricky issues, such as custody arrangements that place the child's needs above their own.

"It's not really an issue of whose house, and I encourage people not to talk about 'their' house or 'their' time with the kids, but the kid's time with them," Wiseman said.

A single parent may have another mate, but they must acknowledge the child's need to see his parents happily together on special occasions.

"Hopefully those persons can understand, be big enough that they can rise above petty jealousies to say, 'This is good. Those two parents should be together,'" Wiseman said. "They should honor the events of their children."

In the end, it's all about the parents in question showing the maturity that successful parenthood demands.

"Some people at 30 are ready to be parents, many are not," Wiseman said. "But since the child is on the scene, I think the better part of wisdom would be to pick up the ball and run with it, just like a good quarterback does."

Let's be candid about this. Tom Brady has been cruising in the superstar fast lane for a while now -- a lifestyle that may not be compatible with effective fatherhood. We know Brady as someone who almost always rises to the occasion -- on the field. We'll soon see if he's the kind of guy who delivers in the clutch off the field.
