Keller: Mass. Drivers Should Not Throw Stones

Quiz: What Kind Of Driver Are You?

BOSTON (WBZ) ― With all the recent attention on problems with elderly drivers, it's easy to forget they're not the only ones with issues.

Massachusetts drivers, as a group, rate poorly in most national surveys.

WBZ's Jon Keller took an adventure on our dangerous roadways at the height of rush hour traffic to see what drivers are trying to get away with. So with his trusty seatbelt buckled, Keller was off.

AND WE'RE OFF

Keller didn't have to stay out there very long to get the video that proves troubled elderly drivers are by no means unique.

Thirty seconds out of the parking lot and he encounters his first speeding violation. The speed limit on Soldier's Field Road is 35 miles per hour, and that's how fast he was going, but obviously that isn't fast enough for fellow Bostonians. Cars blast by, leaving Keller in the dust.

Even after increasing his speed by 5 mph, which is over the speed limit, a driver in a pickup starts to tailgate him. Let's hop Keller doesn't have to stop short!

NASCAR ON THE ROADS

Many of us apparently see driving as an eternal quest to outrun each other.

A car pulling out on North Beacon Street in Brighton cut Keller off, only to almost slam into another car trying to make a turn before getting hit.

Drivers are constantly trying to beat the law as well. Keller saw one driver in a black SUV race through a yellow light, just before it turned red.

Drivers also don't think twice about creating gridlock by blocking traffic intersections. Keller saw plenty of that on his road trip.

And when drivers are not ignoring red lights, flashing reds aren't even noticed. It seems we're risking fines, arrest and public safety just for the heck of it.

Incredibly, Keller made it back alive – this time.

DON'T STOP WITH ELDERLY DRIVERS

Nothing Keller experienced rises to the level of the horror in Stoughton, but it's no stretch to suggest that the recklessness and selfishness is all part of the same problem.

Should there be a crackdown on bad senior drivers? Absolutely, but according to Keller, we should not stop there.
