Gov. Deval Patrick is accusing a governor's council candidate of faking an endorsement.
Councilor Kelly Timilty of Dedham allegedly sent out
a mailing to voters that had Gov. Patrick's signature and an endorsement message from him two things Patrick's office said he did not do. "The mailing sent out recently by the Timilty campaign was not approved by the Deval Patrick Committee, nor did the governor approve or author the letter that bares his signature," Liz Morningstar, executive director of the governor's political committee told
The Boston Globe.
Morningstar added that the Patrick committee is exploring legal options, but would not elaborate on what those options were.
PolitickerMa.com obtained a copy of the endorsement flyer that also had Patrick's signature. It read: "Please join me in supporting Kelly Timilty for Governor's Council. Kelly has proven time and time again that she is up to the challenge of representing her district in the Governor's Council. She knows the true meaning of public service and she is a tireless advocate for he(r) constituents.
"I know Kelly Timilty and I know how hard she works each and everyday to ensure that we have a fair and thorough judicial confirmation process. I have enjoyed working with Kelly and I hope you ensure she continues to serve the Commonwealth for another term on the Governor's Council. "
Timilty beat Robert Jubinville to win Tuesday's Democratic primary.
Timilty's father, Joseph Timilty, told The Boston Globe that putting the governor's signature on the postcard was "a terrible error," but the campaign still believed the governor had endorsed her.
The
Governor's Council is composed of eight people elected from districts and the lieutenant governor. The council acts on such issues as payments from the state treasury, criminal pardons and communications, and approval of gubernatorial appointments such as judges, notaries and justices of the peace.
According to the Globe, the annual salary for councilors, who meet once a week, is $26,000.
