The U-Pick sign on Mammoth Road in Londonderry NH refers to the apples in Mack's orchard. But it's a perfect fit for a political rally 19-days shy of Election Day.
And it was here that we asked about the man many thought won the
final presidential debate -- Joe the Plumber.
"What was that all about?" laughed Jeannette White. "I just think it was desperation."
Said Don Miller, "A guy who is apparently making more than $250,000 doesn't really represent the majority of Americans."
They were on their way to see their presidential pick, Democratic Senator Barack Obama.
Obama delivered a speech that was heavy on economic issues to a crowd of a few thousand in Londonderry. He mentioned John McCain's plumber of choice-- exactly once.
"He's (McCain) trying to suggest that a plumber is the guy he's fighting for. How many plumbers you know making a quarter million dollars a year? I've got a different set of priorities. I'll give a middle class tax cut to 95 percent of all taxpayers," said Obama.
National and New Hampshire polls put Obama in the lead, but the Illinois senator urged his supporters to ignore that.
"New Hampshire, we are 19 days away from changing this country. Nineteen days away. And for those of you who are getting a little cocky, I've got two words for you: New Hampshire."
The reason for that: in the days leading up to the NH primary, Barack Obama was considered all but a sure thing to win. On primary night, though, it was another candidate, New York Senator Hillary Clinton, who made the victory speech.
