Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney endorsed fellow Republican John McCain for president Thursday afternoon.
A source close to the Romney campaign tells WBZ's Jon Keller the endorsement came together only this morning.
McCain accepted the endorsement at Romney's campaign headquarters in Boston. The former governor will release his 280 delegates and ask them to support McCain.
Romney told Keller the differences he and McCain have won't affect this endorsement.
"I still have my views," Romney said. "The senator has his views. But as a party, we come together."
"Right now, the Democrats are fighting. Let us come together and make progress while they're fighting."
According to Keller, Romney is hoping this endorsement will intensify pressure on Mike Huckabee to follow in his footsteps and throw his support behind the Arizona governor a move that would push McCain over the number of delegates needed to secure the GOP nomination.
Romney dropped out of the race last week after it became apparent that toppling McCain would be near impossible, given his lead in the hunt for convention delegates.
There have been no deals made or sought between Romney and McCain, according to the source. "This is about unifying our party the faster, the better," he says.
