One of the oldest coed maritime colleges located in Bourne will change its training ship name from the "T.S. Enterprise" to "The Kennedy" in honor of the Kennedy family.
The Mass. Maritime Academy's President Richard Gurnon said the idea stemmed from U.S. representative William Delahunt who wanted to honor Sen. Edward Kennedy, who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in May.
Kennedy completed his last day of chemotherapy last month and has been recuperating at his Cape Cod home since then.
In addition to Kennedy, the ship will also pay tribute to the late Pres. John F. Kennedy, former U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy and the oldest Kennedy sibling, Joseph, who was killed in WWII while on a secret bombing missing.
Gurnon said the renaming the T.S. Enterprise will also be a fitting honor to patriarch Joseph Kennedy, who was nation's first Maritime Administrator.
The renaming could take place this fall, pending approval from the academy's board of trustees, Gov. Deval Patrick and the Maritime Administrator Sean Connaughton.
