Kennedy To Receive Honorary Degree From Harvard

React: Tell Us Your Thoughts, Stories About Ted Kennedy

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Sen. Edward Kennedy is being awarded an honorary degree from Harvard University.

The Massachusetts Democrat was supposed to receive the award on Thursday during the school's 357th commencement ceremony, but he's recovering from brain surgery at Duke Medical Center in North Carolina.

Kennedy was diagnosed with a malignant glioma in the left parietal lobe of his brain after suffering a seizure on May 17 at his home in Hyannisport. He underwent 3 1/2 hours of surgery on Monday at Duke, where doctors provided few details about the surgery, including how much of the tumor was removed.

Doctors say there were no complications from the surgery.

Kennedy did say in a statement he was looking forward to accepting the Harvard honor in person very soon.

Kennedy was expelled from Harvard in 1951 after he was caught cheating but eventually returned, earning his degree in 1956.
