Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry said after spending time with the family of his longtime colleague Edward Kennedy that "a very spiritual" vigil is taking place.
Kerry, accompanied by his wife Teresa Heinz Kerry, spoke briefly with reporters Wednesday evening as he left the Kennedy compound where friends and family are mourning the longtime senator.
Kennedy died there late Tuesday from brain cancer.
Kerry said Kennedy is "lying at rest and it's very spiritual, about as beautiful as it could be."
He said, "I think it's everything Sen. Kennedy would have wanted,"
He said he would remember Kennedy for his passion for public service and his sense of humor.
He said the family is grateful for the remembrances flowing in from the public.
