Midway through the recount of votes in the closely contested state senate primary race between challenger Sonia Chang-Diaz and incumbent Senator Dianne Wilkerson officials say a small number of ballots in six precincts are unaccounted for.
Nick Martin, a press assistant to Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, says those ballots total less than 20 of the more than 8000 votes being recounted by elections officials at Boston City Hall.
Martin says the unaccounted ballots are not necessarily missing.
Chang-Diaz defeated Wilkerson by just
228 votes in the Second Suffolk Senatorial District.
After the ballot boxes were unsealed on Saturday, a reader began to read aloud each vote, while a recorder kept count.
Monitors from each campaign sat at either side of the readers and recorders, raising hands to flag campaign attorneys and officials when they want to challenge a ballot.
The recounted tally minus the missing votes put Chang-Diaz ahead by 213. Sen. Wilkerson left before the votes were in, but a spokesperson said they are satisfied with the recount.
Election officials think they know where the missing ballots are and should know for certain by Monday.
