WBZ-TV, the exclusive, local broadcaster of the 111th running of the Boston Marathon, is proud to announce its coverage plans for Monday, April 16, 2007. Carrying out a long tradition of complete marathon coverage, WBZ-TV will be the only local station to broadcast this year's race, bringing exclusive, comprehensive, live coverage of one of the region's premiere sporting events. The day's coverage kicks off at 5:00AM with WBZ-TV News in the Morning anchored by Paula Ebben in studio and Scott Wahle live in Hopkinton for pre-race action and interviews.
Marathon Preview 8-9AM
From 8-9AM, WBZ-TV presents a Marathon Preview co-hosted by Anchor Lisa Hughes and Sports Director Bob Lobel. Hughes will report from the start line in Hopkinton, where she will be joined by Steve Burton to feature athletes as they prepare to run, many for special causes. 26.2 miles away, Lobel will be stationed at the finish line to capture the sights, sounds and energy of the Patriots Day celebration.
WBZ-TV Every Step of the Way 9AM-3PM
Following the hour-long preview special at 8:00AM, WBZ-TV will begin continuing coverage at 9:00AM. Sports Director Bob Lobel will continue pre-race coverage from Boston's Boylston Street finish line. He will be joined throughout the day by WBZ-TV's marathon experts: Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to officially wear numbers in the Boston Marathon, and legendary marathon commentator Toni Reavis.
At 9:25AM, WBZ-TV will cover the start of the wheelchair race live, followed by the start for elite women runners at 9:35AM. WBZ-TV coverage continues with the 10:00AM start of the elite men and all other runners participating in the 111th Boston Marathon.
Offering a front row perspective from the lead men's truck will be former BAA race director and WBZ-TV long-time marathon consultant, Tim Kilduff. Alice Cook will ride in and report from the women's truck. In addition, WBZ-TV's team will be stationed throughout the course to show as many runners as possible with T.J. Winick in Natick, David Robichaud at Heartbreak Hill and Dr. Mallika Marshall at the medical tent. Post race coverage and a complete wrap-up of the day's events will follow on WBZ-TV News at 5PM, 6PM and 11PM.
Track runners online at www.wbztv.com
In addition to the station's on-air coverage, www.wbztv.com will have additional Marathon extras including the Find a Friend tool, which allows you to track your family, friends and favorite runners. Once the race has begun, you will see a link on www.wbztv.com's homepage that will walk you through finding an athlete's progress and split time. Just enter your friend's name or bib number, then look to see where live cameras are located on the course to catch your friends as they jog past them.
