John Verrilli Named News Director For Boston's WBZ
BOSTON, MA Wednesday, January 7, 2009 John Verrilli has been named News Director for Boston's WBZ-TV and TV38, it was announced today by Ed Piette, the President and General Manager of the stations. Verrilli will assume his new position on Monday, February 2, 2009.
Verrilli joins WBZ-TV and TV38 from KDKA-TV and WPCW-TV, the CBS owned stations in Pittsburgh, where he has been News Director for four and a half years.
"John is a smart and experienced news executive with nearly two decades of major market experience who, over the course of his career, has earned an excellent reputation as a leader and a winner," said Piette. As a member of the CBS family since 2002, he has excelled everywhere he has been, including New York, where he served as Managing Editor at WCBS-TV; and Pittsburgh, where as News Director he played the key role in revitalizing KDKA and leading the station's newscasts to first place, both in overall viewership and the key sales demos. We look forward to seeing John continue to succeed as he assumes responsibility for leading our news department."
"The chance to head the news department at WBZ-TV and WSBK-TV is the opportunity of a lifetime," said Verrilli. "I know what it feels like to work hard alongside an excellent team of journalists to build newscasts back to their rightful number one position in a marketplace. I am particularly thrilled to be coming back to New England because both my wife and I grew up in Connecticut, in fact our families still live there, and we vacation in Hyannisport each summer with our boys."
Verrilli brings more than 22 years of broadcast journalism experience to WBZ-TV and TV38. Prior to joining KDKA and WPCW in 2004, he spent nearly two decades with stations in the New York market. He joined CBS in 2002 as Managing Editor at WCBS-TV. Before that, he served as the Weekend News Manager at WNBC-TV. He began his career in broadcast journalism in 1986 at WNYW-TV, where he rose through the ranks and become Assistant News Director.
An Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Award-winning journalist, Verrilli graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. in 1984. He is married and has three young sons.
Boston's WBZ-TV and TV38 are part of CBS Television Stations, a division of CBS Corporation.
