Jonathan Elias Debuts On WBZ-TV News

Elias to co-anchor with Lisa Hughes at 5PM

Co-anchor with Sara Underwood at 5:30PM, and report at 11PM

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Award-winning journalist Jonathan Elias will debut as an anchor/reporter on WBZ-TV News beginning this Thursday, October 4; it was announced today by Jeff Kiernan, WBZ-TV and TV38 News Director.

Elias will co-anchor WBZ-TV News at 5PM with Lisa Hughes, co-anchor WBZ-TV News at 5:30PM with Sara Underwood, and report in WBZ-TV News at 11PM. Anchors Lisa Hughes and Jack Williams will continue to co-anchor WBZ-TV News at 6PM and at 11PM.

"Jonathan is an accomplished broadcast journalist," Kiernan said. "He has a proven ability of developing a trusting relationship with viewers. Boston viewers will soon come to know Jonathan and rely on his work. "

Jonathan Elias joins WBZ-TV from KNXV-TV in Phoenix, AZ where he served as an anchor/reporter for ABC15 News at 4PM, 5PM, 6PM, and 10PM. While at KNXV-TV, he field anchored some of the most influential stories in recent history including Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita, and the sniper shootings in Washington D.C. Elias was named 2006 Anchor of the Year by the Arizona Associated Press Broadcasters Association, and he is an Emmy Award winner for Best Investigative Writing.

Before his five years at KNXV-TV, Elias was an anchor/reporter at KCBS-TV in Los Angeles, CA where he won a Golden Mike award. Elias joined KCBS-TV from WCCO-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul where he was an anchor/reporter, and he was part of the WCCO-TV team who won a prestigious George Foster Peabody Award. Before WCCO-TV, Elias was a reporter at KOVR-TV in Sacramento, CA where he covered some of the biggest stories in the nation including the Oakland Hills fire and the Los Angeles riots after the Rodney King beating. Elias was twice honored with a Northern California Emmy for investigative reporting, and the Associated Press named him "Best Reporter in Large Market Television." Before KOVR-TV, Elias was a general assignment reporter at WBRC-TV in Birmingham, AL. While there, both the Associated Press and United Press International named him "Reporter of the Year," and he received an Associated Press award for his coverage of the Huntsville Tornado. He began his on air career in 1988 at KCPM-TV in Chico, California.

Jonathan has a B.A. in history from California State University at Northridge. He and his wife, Holly, are high school sweethearts who met when the two were just five years old. The couple has a 12-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old son. In addition to having fun with his family, Jonathan enjoys golf, martial arts, weightlifting, rock climbing, and target shooting. Now and then, he likes to "pick the banjo" or play the piano.
