Red Sox Sign Francona To 3-Year Extension
FORT MYERS, FLA. (WBZ) ―
The Red Sox have signed Terry Francona to a three-year contract extension that will make him one of the game's highest-paid managers.
Beginning in 2009, the deal will pay Francona in the $3 million-$4 million range each year. WBZ's Dan Roche reports Francona is being paid $1.75 million in 2008, $3.5 million in 2009, $3.75 million in 2010 and $4 million in 2011.
The deal includes buyouts as well as a two-year club option for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
Roche reports that general manager Theo Epstein broke the news to the team Sunday morning. The announcement was met with applause from the players.
Francona is beginning his fifth year as Red Sox manager. The Red Sox have won two World Series in that time, making Francona the second Red Sox manager to lead the team to two championships.
