With the cost of filling a tank going sky high, drivers are feeling the pinch. Everyone is focused on gas mileage.
Consumer Reports' auto editor Rik Paul says some hybrids get great mileage, but that doesn't mean they're big money savers. "Hybrids typically provide the best fuel economy in their class. But you're going to pay extra money up front, sometimes thousands of dollars, to buy one."
But don't despair. If saving money is your highest priority, Consumer Reports says there are plenty of cars that stretch your fuel economy. "You can save a lot of money annually simply by doing some smart shopping among conventional vehicles," said Paul.
One smart choice is the Scion XB with a manual transmission. You'll get 32 miles per gallon overall, and plenty of cargo space.
If you don't need that much room, the Honda Civic EX, also with a manual transmission, is a good option. It'll give you 40 miles per gallon on the highway.
If you want a mid-sized sedan, the four-cylinder Honda Accord EX gets an impressive 38 miles per gallon on the highway, about as good as the Honda Accord Hybrid.
And if a sporty car is your preference, the Mini Cooper may be pint sized, but it delivers 30 miles per gallon overall
Consumer Reports says these are just a few of the vehicles that can help you save gas and money.
