New Products Claim To Make Hair Color Last

BOSTON (WBZ) ― By some estimates half of all American women color their hair.

All those trips to the salon add up but with some help, customers can save money and still look great.

Do-it-yourself products are cheaper but most women agree when it comes to hair color nothing beats a pro.

"I prefer to have it done by my hair dresser," one woman said. "I just get a little color added just to boost it."

But that quality comes at a hefty price because some colorists can charge hundreds of dollars a pop.

In this economy, that's a big chunk of change.

Some women have to visit the salon once a month but there are a couple of new products on the market that will help stretch an extra week or two out of every trip.

David Orlando of the Diego Salon on Newbury Street recommends women use a new colored spray to keep their color fresh between visits to the salon.

Bumble and Bumble makes a spray in several shades. Each can costs about $35.

"What this powder is really great for is covering up gray roots until your touch up," Orlando said.

Over the course of a year the savings can really add up.

"You could miss three or four touchups with this product a year," Orlando said. "So you're saving between five hundred and a thousand dollars, without a doubt."

Another new product to try is hair mascara, which is just like the product made for eye lashes but is combed onto hair to touch up the roots.

It runs about $10 dollars a tube.

The women we talked to all loved the idea of saving money but some were a bit skeptical.

"Wow, that sounds great. I think with red hair though I would be afraid to use it," one woman said. "Orange is tough but I guess I would try it."

It might be worth a shot to save hundreds of dollars at the salon.

Bumble and Bumble hair products are sold at many salons in the Boston area or on the company's Web site.
