Luxury Splurges Reduce Stress Amid Economic Woes

Tricks To Reduce Stress

BOSTON (WBZ) ― In these tough economic times, people tend to cut back wherever they can to save money, but some people may be more willing to splurge on luxuries that help them relax.

There's nothing that says relaxing more than a peaceful massage and manicure. Every Friday Anne Heller comes to the Indulgence Day Spa in Lexington.

"It's pampering. It's taking care of myself," Heller said. "I work hard all week."

These days money is tight for many families but it is not stopping them from taking care of themselves.

At the G20 Spa and Salon on Newbury Street spa director Christine Haddad says people are willing to spend to relax.

"Any type of spa service will help because it helps the psyche as well as get the beauty service," Haddad said.

Whether it's an $18 pedicure or a $90 massage, Dr. David Mischoulon with Massachusetts General Hospital says a day at the spa to relieve stress is money well spent.

"If you are under a lot of stress, whether it's the economy or job, a massage or anything often can be very helpful," Mischoulon said.

Pampering yourself for an hour has its benefits as long as you stay within your budget and it helps take your mind off these stressful times.

Heller said she's careful how much she spends.

"It's been about four months since a massage," she said. "It's a little expensive."

"If you feel tension and stress it's a small price to pay for service done on yourself.  You feel better about yourself," said Laurel Carey with Indulgence Day Spa.

Just an hour at the spa can go a long way.

Spa directors say many clients are coming in for just 15 minutes. The key is to look for a service that's affordable and enjoy the experience and try not to think about the economy.
