Louisiana Faces Cleanup After Gustav

Gustav came right on the heels of another powerful storm, Tropical Storm Fay. It hit New Orleans as a Category 2 storm, driving millions of residents to flee beforehand. The city was largely spared, with more remote regions feeling the brunt of the storm.

Drivers lined up at a checkpoint by police on the way into New Orleans Sept. 3, 2008, in New Orleans, La. The city's Mayor Ray Nagin said Sept. 3 that residents with proper photo identification could return to their homes ahead of the official re-opening of the city.
