WBZ-TV's Dan Roche has confirmed that the Red Sox have now made
outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury the "centerpiece" of their trade offer to
the Minnesota Twins in exchange for star pitcher Johan Santana.
The
Sox had been reluctant to include the talented centerfielder in a deal,
but have now done so after the Yankees reportedly upped the ante on
their offer by including prize pitcher Phil Hughes.
The
24-year-old Ellsbury hit .353 in 33 games this regular season and was a
star in the postseason after being inserted into the Sox lineup for
Coco Crisp during the ALCS comeback against Cleveland. Ellsbury hit
.360 in the postseason with an OBP of .429 and a slugging percentage of
.520.
If the Sox can get a deal in place with
the Twins, baseball would grant the Sox a 72-hour window to negotiate a
new contract with Santana. It's expected he would ask for five to six
years at $20+ million per season.
