Mirabelli Coming Back To Boston

BOSTON (CBS4) ― It appears that the Red Sox have finally found someone to catch Tim Wakefield's knuckleball.

Doug Mirabelli is coming back to Boston and will be in the starting lineup tonight to catch Wakefield in the series opener against the New York Yankees.

The Red Sox have sent backup catcher Josh Bard, minor-league pitcher Cla Meredith and cash to the San Diego Padres for Mirabelli.

The Red Sox traded Mirabelli to the Padres last December for second baseman Mark Loretta.

Mirabelli had been Wakefield's personal catcher in Boston. He was backing up Mike Piazza In San Diego.

ESPN'S Buster Olney reports the Yankees also tried to obtain Mirabelli to keep him from returning to the Red Sox.

The trade should give the Red Sox and their fans some peace of mind. Bard had caught all five of Wakefield's starts this season and struggled, allowing 10 passed balls, which leads the major leagues.
