With a victory over the New York Jets next Sunday, the Patriots would become only the second 14-0 team in NFL history.
The first, of course, were the Miami Dolphins, who played a 14-game regular season and went on to win the Super Bowl and complete the league's only perfect season.
The NFL now plays 16 regular season games, with the Patriots facing the winless Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants following the Jets.
New England clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs with the 34-13 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday, and need only one more win or Indianapolis Colts' loss to assure home-field advantage through the AFC playoffs.
Tom Brady and Randy Moss are also closing in on some individual records.
Brady has 45 touchdown passes on the season, four shy of Peyton Manning's record of 49 in 2004.
Moss has caught 19 of those Brady TD passes, and needs only four more to break Jerry Rice's single-season record for touchdown receptions.
