Police Won't Tolerate Rowdiness If Celtics Win

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Boston Police are urging fans to show restraint if the Celtics win the NBA title Tuesday night.

Officers are increasing patrols around the TD Banknorth Garden both before and after Game 6 of the NBA Finals between the Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. They are also using video surveillance at key areas around the city and helicopters to control rowdiness.

Parking restrictions also are in place near the arena, and officials are encouraging fans to use public transportation or taxis.

Police are promising to strictly enforce all alcohol laws, including those that prohibit public drinking.

Club and bar owners are being asked to either turn televisions away from windows or cover windows so that televisions are not visible from the street where they can attract crowds.

The Celtics lead the series 3-2. Previous New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox championship celebrations have been marred by deaths among revelers.

If the Celtics win, it would be the first championship won in the city of Boston since 1986, the last time the Celtics won the title. The Red Sox World Series wins and the Patriots Super Bowl titles have all been on the road.
