BC Beats Minn. For Coach York's 800th Career Win
WORCESTER (AP) ―
Joe Whitney set up Benn Ferriero's tie-breaking goal midway through the second period and added an insurance score in the third to lift Boston College to a 5-2 win over Minnesota in the NCAA Division I Northeast Regional semifinals on Saturday night.
Coach Jerry York, in his 14th season at BC and his 36th overall, earned his 800th career win, second-most in NCAA history behind former Michigan State coach Ron Mason, who had 924.
The Eagles (22-11-8) will try to make their 21st Frozen Four when they faces Miami of Ohio (33-7-1), a 3-2 overtime winner against Air Force, in the regional championship on Sunday. The teams met in last year's Northeast Regional final, with BC posting a 4-0 win.
Pat Gannon, Ben Smith and Nathan Gerbe had BC's other goals.
Ben Gordon and Mike Howe scored for Minnesota (19-17-9), playing in its 32nd NCAA tourney most of any school and eighth straight.
The Eagles caught the Golden Gophers on a line change when Whitney skated in on a 2-on-1 break before sending a cross-ice pass to Ferriero, who one-timed a shot past goalie Alex Kangas to give BC a 2-1 lead at 7:58 of the second period.
Gannon redirected Matt Greene's pass by Kangas from in close, making it 3-1 early in the third. Whitney put it away when he scored from in close at 8:46.
Gordon cut it to 4-2, but Gerbe added an empty-netter.
BC, making it 10th NCAA appearance in 11 years, grabbed a 1-0 lead on Smith's power-play goal 6:33 into the game. Minnesota tied on Howe's score 3:01 into the second.
