Report: Celtics Owner Pagliuca Mulls Senate Run

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Stephen Pagliuca, co-owner of the Boston Celtics, is considering a run for the late Edward M. Kennedy's Senate seat, reports the Associated Press.

A top adviser said Monday Pagliuca, who is managing director of Mitt Romney's former firm, Bain Capital, "is experienced with the two big issues today: health care and the economy."

He has assembled a team of advisers and could announce a decision this week, says the adviser, who demanded anonymity before a final decision is made.

One complication: Pagliuca has also assembled a team weighing the purchase of The Boston Globe.

Pagliuca has made millions at Bain, and he is part of a team that rejuvenated the Celtics and led them to win an NBA record 17th World Championship.

While Romney, a Republican, appointed his wife, Judy Pagliuca, to the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority board of directors, Stephen Pagliuca is a Democrat, the adviser says.

A candidacy may not be the only one from the Boston sports world. Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling has also said he's weighing a campaign.

So far, Attorney General Martha Coakley is seeking the Democratic nomination. Canton Selectman Bob Burr and state Sen. Scott Brown are competing for the GOP bid.

Kennedy died last month of brain cancer. The primary is Dec. 8 and the general election is Jan. 19.
