BOSTON (WBZ) ― As the Celtics prepare for Game Two of their best-of-seven series with the Atlanta Hawks, one of their superstars has something extra to smile about. Forward Kevin Garnett was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday.

The 6'11" Garnett led the Celtics in rebounds with a 9.2 average. He averaged 1.2 blocks and 1.4 steals per game, as well as 18.8 points.

He received 90 of 124 first place votes from the panel of sports writers and sports broadcasters.

Garnett helped lead the Celtics to the league's best record, with 66 wins and only 16 losses. The team also enjoyed the biggest one-season turnaround in NBA history - winning 42 more games than last season.

Kevin Garnett came to the Celtics last summer after 12 seasons on the Minnesota Timberwolves.
