Hundreds of young baseball and softball players from Massachusetts are playing a 36-hour baseball game to raise money for charity.
817 children ages 5 through 15 started playing at 8 a.m. Saturday at King Philip Regional High School in Wrentham.
They're trying to set the record for the longest baseball game ever played.
The current record is 32 hours and 29 minutes.
They hope to play until 8 p.m. on Sunday.
"I love baseball, I love community and I love poking around in unusual records and when I saw the longest baseball game in hours and minutes was only 32 hours and 29 minutes, I thought we can do that, I think we have a chance at that," said Jim Lucas, organizer of The Longest Game.
"We're going to break the record and go to the world record book for 2009," 7-year-old Grant Orzell told WBZ.
The goal is to raise $75,000 for charities, including Curt's Pitch for ALS, the March of Dimes and a number of local scholarship funds and nonprofit groups.
Kids who raise $250 or more will get to attend a lunch with former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling.
Organizers estimate the children, who play in the Wrentham Youth Baseball/Softball Association, will have nearly 900 outs, more than 1,700 batters and about 300 runs.
About 4,000 pitches could be thrown.
