Red Sox Reach Deals With Brad Penny, Josh Bard

CBS station WBZ-TV in Boston has confirmed that the Red Sox have agreed to contracts with free agent right-handed pitcher Brad Penny and catcher Josh Bard.
Penny will receive a one-year, $5 million contract with up to an additional $3 million in incentives.
Bard agreed to a one-year, $1.6 million, non-guaranteed contract.
Penny, 30, was 6-9 with a 6.27 ERA with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008. He missed much of the season with tendinitis in his right shoulder.
Penny was 32-13 for the Dodgers in 2006-07. His lifetime record is 94-75 with a 4.06 ERA.
Bard, 30, hit .202 with one home run and 16 RBI in 57 games with the San Diego Padres in 2008. A switch-hitter, he has a lifetime average of .265 with 28 home runs.
Bard played briefly with the Red Sox in 2006, appearing in just seven games before being traded to the Padres with pitcher Cla Meredith in exchange for catcher Doug Mirabelli. The Red Sox traded him because of his difficulties catching Tim Wakefield's knuckleball.
Both deals are contingent on the players' passing physicals.
