Vancouver Security To Cost More Than $700 Million
VICTORIA, British Columbia (AP) ―
Canadian officials say security for the 2010 Winter Olympics in British Columbia will cost $715 million -- more than five times the original estimate.
The Canadian government had previously acknowledged that costs were likely to increase, but no budget was released while Federal and provincial officials negotiated how to split the costs.
British Columbia will pay $200 million while Canada pays for the rest -- including any unforeseen expenses.
Canadian Minister of Public Safety Peter Van Loan said he wants visitors to enjoy the games without having to be distracted by questions over security.
Thursday's announcement came as most Canadians were distracted by president Barack Obama's visit to the country.
