Loyal Patriots Fans Hold Court In Phoenix

PHOENIX (WBZ) ― The next week is going to be very busy for Chris Seufert. The New Hampshire native is preparing parties, rallies and celebrations for Patriots fans… in Arizona.

Seufert is part of the New England Patriots Fan Club of Arizona – a dedicated group of hundreds that meet in a Phoenix bar every Sunday during football season to cheer on their beloved team.

The New England Patriots Fan Club of Arizona is the team's biggest fan club outside of New England. Seufert said the club, which has called The Vine on East Indian School Road home for the past nine years, has close to 800 members, seven board of directors, a president, a vice president, a secretary and a president.

One of the organization's most notable members in none other than Patriots owner Bob Kraft – "charter member number 76," Seufert said.

The club has been around since 1997, and most of the board members do have New England ties.

Seufert calls the members of the club his "Sunday family" and refers to the bar as the Foxboro of the southwest. "I don't care if it's televised on TV or not, we're here," he said. "The rowdiness, the comradery… I can't imagine going anywhere else to watch football."

"There's a lot of days, for days, I can't talk. I'm so hoarse I can hardly talk. There's so much screaming, everyone's hands are so swollen up from the high-fiving."

Many of the Patriots club members sit in the same seats every week at the Vine to watch the game, and during half time, they have a raffle. In fact, half the Patriots paraphernalia Seufert owns was won in game raffles.

So with the Patriots in town this week and the Super Bowl on Sunday, you can only imagine how busy Seufert and the rest of the club members have been planning events and parties for New England fans in the area.

The festivities start Tuesday and will run through Super Bowl Sunday, Seufert said. Not only does Seufert expect between 1,000 and 2,000 people at each party, Patriots owner Robert Kraft and former Patriots Andre Tippett and John Hannah are expect to be at the bar on Tuesday.

By the end of the week, part of the parking lot outside the bar will be fenced off and a dj will come in for a pre-Super Bowl bash. Even the New England Patriots cheerleaders might show up, Seufert said.

And as a lead in to Sunday's game, Seufert said an Eli Manning scarecrow will be torched during Saturday's rally. A bit harsh, but it really gets the New England fans going.

Seufert said the Patriots fan club is throwing these parties because they really want to do something fun for Patriots fans – especially those coming to Phoenix, or who already live here, who did not want to pay thousands of dollars for a game ticket. "It's a lot of work, but this is what we live for as a club all year long."

Once the Patriots clinched the division title and knew they were headed for the Super Bowl, Seufert said the club has been swamped with inquiries from fans as far as Japan and England looking to be a part of the big game festivities.

Seufert said he knew this was going to be great season in the summer, and since then – just like past seasons -- he has devoted every Sunday to the Patriots and the Vine.

Seufert predicts the Patriots will win 31-24 on Sunday. He said Patriots Coach Bill Belichick has had a lot of time to look at the Giants. "When he has two weeks to prepare for a club… not too many teams beat us. I think it's going to be a good game."

So after all of the parties are over, and the Patriots' season finally wraps up, what does Seufert plan to do in the offseason? "Suffer," he said.
