The
New England Patriots have resigned quarterback Matt Gutierrez less than three weeks after he was released from the squad.
Gutierrez, 24, will be the backup quarterback to
Matt Cassel.
Gutierrez was signed as a rookie free agent out of Idaho State on May 8, 2007. The 6-foot 4-inch, 230 pound quarterback played in five games for the Patriots last season and completed one pass for 15 yards.
He was released on Aug. 30 with
13 other players.
There was a lot speculation over who the second quarterback would be after it was learned
Tom Brady would have
season-ending knee surgery.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Head coach Bill Belichick confirmed that Tampa Bay's
Chris Simms and
Tim Rattay of Arizona
were in town. "They visited," he said. "But we didn't give them a physical and we didn't work them out. I didn't even see them while they were here. They did visit. They did come in, but we didn't end up doing anything with them. We sent them back."
The Patriots are getting ready to play
Brett Farve and the
New York Jets on Sunday.
