Former Patriots wide receiver Donte Stallworth pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges on Wednesday. Stallworth is charged with hitting and killing a pedestrian in March while driving drunk in Miami.
Stallworth, 28, did not appear in court. His attorney, Christopher Lyons, entered the plea for him.
On March 14, Stallworth hit and killed 59-year-old Mario Reyes on Miami's busy MacArthur Causeway. Police say Stallworth's blood--alcohol level after the crash was .12, well above Florida's legal limit of .08, according to results of a blood test.
A Miami Beach police report said that Reyes was not in a crosswalk when he was struck by Stallworth's car.
The report also quoted Stallworth as saying he flashed his lights at Reyes in an attempted warning and that Stallworth was driving about 50 mph in a 40 mph zone.
Stallworth is free on $200,000 bail and is required to abstain from alcohol, not drive and observe a curfew.
Stallworth signed a seven-year, $35 million contract with the Cleveland Browns before last season but was injured much of the year.
Stallworth previously played for New England in 2007 and Philadelphia and New Orleans.
