While people make plans to spend time with their moms this Mother's Day weekend, New England Patriots running back Laurence Maroney is taking his mother for a walk.
Maroney and his mom are the honorary co-chairs for Saturday's
March of Dimes Walk, which funds research for birth defects and premature births.
The cause has personal meaning to both mother and son because Maroney was born premature.
"It was rough growing up just listening to the stories my mama told me," Maroney said. "When I was born I had to sit in the hospital for a whole month before I got to come home. I had to be in an incubator with all these monitors on me. It was real tough."
Maroney was two months premature and weighed 4 pounds 5 ounces when he was born.
"It's funny looking back on it now, my mama used to tell me she could fit me in the palm of her hand," he added.
Maroney says he wants to be an example to others of what can be accomplished in life no matter what challenges people face early on.
"I went through it. My mother went through it. We can be inspirations to other parents to let them know that no matter how big the baby is when its born it will get bigger and stronger and can be whatever it wants to be."
More than 1,000 Boston area families and company teams will take part in the March of Dimes three-mile walk, which gets started at 12:30 p.m. at the Hatch Shell.
