Patriots To Face Chargers In AFC Championship

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ) ― The New England Patriots will face the San Diego Chargers next Sunday at Gillette Stadium for the AFC Championship and a shot at the Super Bowl.

The Chargers stunned the Colts in Indianapolis, 28-24, Sunday to earn the trip to Foxborough.

They're hoping for a better performance than their last trip back in Week 2, when the Patriots crushed San Diego, 38-14, at Gillette.

That was the beginning of a slide to 5-5 for San Diego, but the Chargers (13-5) are rolling now.

They're also very banged up.

All-Pro running back LaDainian Tomlinson and quarterback Philip Rivers were both hurt in the Indianapolis game.

L.T. departed in the first half with a bruised left knee.   Rivers went out in the third quarter with a damaged right knee.  Tight end Antonio Gates courageously played much of the day on a dislocated toe.

Backup quarterback Billy Volek and backup running back Michael Turner led the Chargers to victory Sunday.

"Going out on the road and winning in Indy today shows the kind of mental toughness they have," Patriots coach Bill Belichick told reporters in a conference call shortly after the Chargers' victory. "They've got a very talented team. I think everybody realizes that."

The Patriots also knocked the Chargers out of the playoffs last January after San Diego posted an NFL-best 14-2 record in 2006.

"A lot's happened since then. We'll definitely start all over on the preparations. It's like it's a new team," Belichick said. "Our whole season's at stake; so's theirs. I don't think anything that's happened in the past has much bearing on it."
