Patriots Draft Tennessee's Mayo With 10th Pick
NEW YORK (AP) ―
The New England Patriots have used the 10th overall pick in the NFL draft to choose linebacker Jerod Mayo of Tennessee.
Mayo finished his junior year with 140 tackles, 8 1-2 for loss, 1 1-2 sacks, a forced fumble and an interception while making 13 of his 14 starts at middle linebacker. He started 11 games in 2006, ending up with 83 tackles, 2 1-2 for loss and five sacks.
Mayo had one brush with the law while at Tennessee, accused of hitting another student at a campus party. Those charges were dropped when the accuser failed to show up in court.
Mayo has a nice build and strength up top at over 6-foot-1 and 242 pounds. His speed and agility allow him to cover outside run plays. He has a keen awareness of the ball and will hurl himself into jarring tackles.
New England had the seventh overall pick, but traded with New Orleans to move down to the tenth spot, where they selected Mayo.
