New England Patriots offensive lineman Nicholas Kaczur was arrested on drug charges and an attorney reportedly claims the player then helped federal authorities in a sting operation that led to the indictment of a supplier.
New York State Police confirmed to WBZ Wednesday that Kaczur was arrested in Whitestown, New York in April 27 on a misdemeanor charge of illegal possession of oxycodone, a prescription painkiller.
According to federal court documents, a "cooperating witness" then worked with the Drug Enforcement Administration by wearing a hidden recording device during three drug transactions in May at gas stations in Foxborough and North Attleborough and a supermarket parking lot in Sharon.
The alleged dealer, Daniel Ekasala, was arrested last month and pleaded not guilty to three counts of possession of oxycodone with intent to distribute in federal court in Boston Wednesday. He remains free on $10,000 unsecured bond.
Although the cooperating witness was not identified in court documents, two Boston Globe sources and Ekasala's lawyer, Bernard Grossberg, identified the person as Kaczur.
The DEA would not confirm to WBZ that the witness was Kaczur.
Kaczur, when approached by the Globe, denied knowledge of the investigation.
Patriots spokesman Stacey James told WBZ the team had no comment and that it was a law enforcement matter.
