The Patriots have denied a report that they are unhappy with quarterback Tom Brady's choice of a California doctor to perform his recent knee surgery.
Brady had
surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament on Oct. 6 in Los Angeles. Sources have told WBZ that he has subsequently had two procedures to clean out an infection in the knee, and is on a six-week course of antibiotics.
ESPN reported Thursday that the
"Patriots, as an organization, are upset with the situation because they were clear that they wanted Brady's surgery done under the direction of doctors of their choosing in Boston."
Not so, the team said in a statement Thursday night.
"This unsubstantiated report does not represent the team's views whatsoever," the statement read.
"We have supported Tom Brady 100 percent from Day One of this process and will continue to do so. We issued a statement last Saturday expressing our complete organizational support for Tom. That support includes all aspects of the process. Unfortunately, our statement was not mentioned or referenced in ESPN's report. Today, we reiterate our total support for Tom as he recovers from his injury."
The
Boston Herald reported Thursday that doctors were concerned about containing the infection.
Citing a source, the paper claimed
"the fear is the patellar tendon graft used to replace Brady's anterior cruciate ligament is in danger of becoming compromised. Should that occur, the entire ACL reconstruction would have to be removed and redone from scratch."
That would delay his rehabilitation and recovery. ESPN reported that a person close to Brady said: "Tom is looking at months, not weeks, to fix this."
The Patriots did not address the status of Brady's knee or his prognosis for recovery in their statement. In fact, neither the team nor Brady has ever confirmed the nature of his injury.
Brady has confirmed on his
Web site that he had one arthroscopic procedure done "to clean and to test the wound" on Oct. 15.
