Long-time New England Revolution assistant coach Paul Marnier has resigned his post with the club, to take an assistant manager position with England's Plymouth Argyle.
"Paul has been a tremendous asset to the Revolution and was respected by every member of our organization during his time with us," Revolution Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns said.
"While we're disappointed to see him leave us, we wanted to allow Paul to pursue this opportunity. We wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors."
Plymouth Argyle director Keith Todd told
BBC Sport it would be good for their team if Mariner joined the staff. Mariner played for the club as a center forward in 1973.
"I don't deny if we could pull something off [with Mariner] it would be very interesting and very good for the club," he told BBC Devon.
Mariner has been with the New England Revolution as the assistant coach to Steve Nichol since 2004. During his tenure, New England advanced to the MLS Cup three times and played in the Eastern Conference title game four times.
"I wish to thank everyone that I've worked with at the Revolution who have been so supportive, including the Kraft family and Steve Nicol," Mariner said.
"I have had a wonderful experience with this club, but I was presented with an offer that is very special to me personally, and I could not pass it up."
