Rajon Rondo says he has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Boston Celtics.
The deal has yet to be signed, but the Celtics point guard said Monday that was just a "formality."
Under the new deal, Rondo's reported $55 million salary now compares with some of the elite point guards in the game.
Rondo said he is relieved about the contract extension. "I definitely don't want to go through a whole season knowing that you may get injured and not having no security."
Monday was the deadline for the Celtics to sign Rondo to an extension or else he would have become a restricted free agent after the season.
Rondo is in his fourth season with Boson and has been a critical part of the team's success. Although he is not a big scorer, he became indispensable because of his great vision, speed, quick hands and toughness.
The Celtics visit the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday.
