Schilling Reports For Final Spring Training
FORT MYERS, Fla. (WBZ) ―
Curt Schilling arrived at his final spring training Thursday morning as pitchers and catchers officially reported for duty at the Red Sox camp in Fort Myers, Florida.
He did not speak to reporters.
All pitchers and catchers must report by 5 p.m. They'll undergo physicals Friday, and the first official workout is Saturday.
Position players will report next Wednesday. The first full-team workout will be a week from Friday.
Schilling has an injured shoulder tendon. The Red Sox's team physician believes the tendon is damaged, not torn, and rehabilitation gives him his best chance to play this year.
However, Schilling's doctor has said he needs surgery if he wants to pitch again.
Schilling said last week in his blog,
38pitches.com, that he has agreed to abide by the club's request to rest and rehab the shoulder.
He signed a one-year, $8 million contract in November that allows him to earn an addition $5 million in performance and weight bonuses. The 41-year-old right-hander has said that this will be his last year.
Schilling said he passed all physical exams when he negotiated his new contract.
The Red Sox had discussed -- and dismissed -- the idea of using a six-man rotation this year. With Schilling out for an extended period of time, they are expected to rely on Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jon Lester, Tim Wakefield and Clay Buchholz.
