High Security For Red Sox World Series Rings

BOSTON (WBZ) ― If you saw a police-escorted motorcade on the Mass Pike this morning, it was not for a foreign dignitary in town. It was the high security surrounding the Red Sox new 2007 World Series rings.

The rings arrived at Fenway Park in DHL trucks at 6 a.m.   Four young fans representing the Jimmy Fund, the Dimock Community Health Center, Red Sox Schools and its youth baseball programs were "honorary couriers."  They handed the rings to Mayor Tom Menino and Red Sox co-owner Tom Werner in a ceremony just after sunrise in the outfield.

Menino opened a box containing David Ortiz's ring and displayed it for the media.

WBZ-TV has learned the rings were made by Josten's, the same company that made the team's 2004 championship bling. We are told the same designer actually worked on the new rings, and they were manufactured at the company's Denton, Texas facility.

Players who were on both Red Sox World Series championship teams will receive rings that look slightly different than players who joined the team after the 2004 season.

A Josten's spokesperson said the company has been working with the Red Sox for months, but they won't give up how much the rings are worth, or how many were manufactured this time around.

You may recall the Red Sox 2004 World Series rings were white gold, encrusted with diamonds and rubies. Each ring was valued at more than $16,000. It wasn't just the players and coaches who received those jewels. Hundreds of rings went to Red Sox employees, alumni, and members of the media.

The public will get its first look at the new Red Sox rings on Tuesday, after they are presented to players during pre-game ceremonies at the Fenway Park season opener.

No word if the Red Sox will repeat their 2005 World Series ring raffle, where three lucky fans won Championship rings of their own.
